Description de l'ouvrage:
This new volume in the Shakespeare on Screen series reveals the remarkable presence of Macbeth in the Shakespearean film landscape worldwide. How can we explain that a play whose plot is anchored in one nation, Scotland, could have been absorbed by such diverse cultures? Do the multiple adaptations of Macbeth paradoxically suggest a lesser relevance of the original play? After exploring the representation of supernatural elements (the witches and the ghost), the volume revisits the "canonical" American films, more recent English-language productions and versions from other cultural areas (Asia, France, South Africa, India, Japan, etc.). Questions of lineage and descent are addressed, then extended in articles on the representation of the genre. The dance versions, appropriations, quotes and mise en abymes of Macbeth are then analyzed, and this journey leads to a strange object: an unfilmed screenplay.
