Book Presentation:
Examines the work of film director Céline Sciamma
• Offers a close analyses of Sciamma’s four feature films
• Focuses on the relation of Sciamma’s works to the visual arts
• Perspectives drawn from Feminist theory
Céline Sciamma is the most visible and important feminist, and lesbian, director in contemporary international filmmaking. Her fourth feature, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2019, and intervened directly in debates about the female gaze, sexuality, and specifically how to look at and make a portrait of young women. In her approach to female, non-binary and queer identities, she has focused on the need for agency, binding this imperative into her aesthetic choices and modes of filmmaking. This is the first book-length study of Sciamma’s films, focusing on the relationship of her work to the visual arts, and exploring the relevance of feminist theory to her unique perspective.

Press Reviews:
Emma Wilson brings her keen powers of observation and critique to filmmaker Céline Sciamma’s rich explorations of the pain and glory of women’s love for other women. Wilson situates Sciamma’s films in a wide and varied web of influence, from Ovid to contemporary feminist and queer theory, from Eric Rohmer to Lucrecia Martel, from Nan Goldin to Carrie Mae Weems. Wilson brilliantly demonstrates that Céline Sciamma’s achievement is nothing less than a rethinking and reimagining of the cinema in feminist and lesbian terms.– Judith Mayne, Ohio State University
This beautifully written volume on the career of international cinema’s most prominent lesbian and feminist filmmaker is every bit as intelligent and stylish as its subject. Comprehensive and accessible, Emma Wilson’s book is a joy to read.– Nick Rees-Roberts, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle
