Description de l'ouvrage:
Becoming a Warrior is the triumphant memoir of about a shy, 10-year-old girl who has a dream and perseveres for fifty years to make that dream come true—to make a movie based on Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. Working in the worlds of politics and entertainment, Catherine Hand learned lessons that gave her the courage and strength to navigate through personal tragedies and professional hurdles. She recounts her time spent with the legendary writer/producer Norman Lear and her 25-year-long conversation with L’Engle about the author’s treasured book. In 2018, five decades after Hand first read A Wrinkle in Time, Walt Disney Studios released a major motion picture based on the award-winning classic. The movie was directed by Ava DuVernay, written by Jennifer Lee, and starred Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Storm Reid. Becoming a Warrior offers a treasure trove of wisdom and advice for anyone with who has a dream.
À propos de l'auteur :
Catherine Hand's career in the entertainment business was launched working for the legendary writer/producer Norman Lear. While pursuing the film adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, Hand relocated to San Francisco where she worked as a development executive, co-owned a boutique production company, and started a family. Widowed suddenly and unexpectedly, Hand moved with her three young children to the DC area and carved out a successful career as communications consultant, including a stint as a political appointee for the Obama administration. In 2018, Catherine Hand was one of the two producers for Disney's adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time.
Revue de Presse:
"...it paints such a compelling picture of Hand's love for the novel the reader can't help but rejoice when the Ava DuVernay-directed film finally began preproduction in 2016." Kirkus reviews
"Catherine's journey of over 50 years to have A Wrinkle In Time brought to the Silver Screen is simply extraordinary." Alan Horn, Former Chairman of Walt Disney Studios
"Catherine Hand leads us on a fascinating journey of discovery, darkness and hope, of America, and her own growing confidence and strength as she succeeds in making her dream come true." Kathleen Kennedy Townsend
"An extraordinarily wide-ranging and powerful read, Hand takes readers from Democratic National Conventions to movie sets to intimate conversations with Madeleine L'Engle about time, love, and trust. Hand writes as beautifully about her time as a radio producer as she does about the magic of Madeleine L'Engle's words, and the effect is an inspiring memoir with lessons for readers of all kinds, whether they are familiar with A Wrinkle in Time or not." Mack McLarty, White House Chief of Staff to President Clinton
Catherine is a wonderful storyteller who has lived a fascinating life in the worlds of politics and entertainment. I wish every young person starting their careers could read this book. It is full of incredible advice from wise people who have tapped into the universe." Lynne Hale, Former VP, Publicity & Communications/Lucasfilm Ltd.
"No one I've known ever loved a book more than Catherine Hand loved A Wrinkle in Time. Her perseverance and journey to make the film is nothing short of inspiring." Norman Lear, award winning writer/producer
"Hand writes with positivity and grace, crediting much of her success to the mentors and friends she generously describes in her memoir, particularly L'Engle, and her first boss, Norman Lear. Film industry enthusiasts, A Wrinkle in Time fans, and those interested in the painstaking process of making a big-budget film in Hollywood will delight in Hand's accessible storytelling and the rewarding tale of a dream coming to fruition." Editor's Pick, Book Life
"Catherine's story is more than a narrative about the making of a particular movie of a particular book. It is the personal history of a woman whose dreams and heartaches also illuminate the cultural and political history of the past 60 years -- full of fascinating and compelling incidents that span the LBJ White House, the 1968 Democratic Convention, Norman Lear's television empire of the 1970s, and Hollywood more recently. Catherine's optimism and warmth shine through." Charlotte Jones Voiklis, author, granddaughter of Madeleine L'Engle
